The Tradition of Excellence Award honors one lawyer for exceptional contributions to—or an exemplary career in—solo, small firm or general practice. This award is reserved for those who have practiced law in Florida for at least ten years. The following criteria are considered:

  1. The lawyer’s efforts to enhance the standing of solos, small firms and general practitioners in Florida;
  2. The lawyer’s contributions to continuing legal education for solos, small firms and general practitioners;
  3. The lawyer’s contributions to the community through public service;
  4. The lawyer’s contributions to the advancement of the administration of justice; and/or
  5. The lawyer’s model career in solo, small firm or general practice.

The Walter S. Crumbley Award honors an attorney who has made a significant contribution to practice management in the State of Florida. The award was originally created by the Practice Management and Development Section in honor of the long service by the late Judge Walter S. Crumbley for his dedicated service to the Bar in the area of law practice management and development.

The Mentor of the Year Award honors one outstanding Florida-licensed attorney who has shown remarkable achievements in the area of mentorship to younger attorneys and/or law students located in Florida. This prestigious award will be given to that singular attorney who has contributed significantly to mentoring other attorneys and/or law students. The section's purpose in providing this award is to recognize that very deserving individual for above-and-beyond efforts in achieving a high standard of professionalism in the delivery of mentorship.

Message from the Chair

Jennifer A. Dietz All of us, whether we practice at big firms, small firms or as solos, whether we represent large or small businesses, individuals or the government, have the same objectives: zealous protection of our client’s interests, providing quality work for reasonable fees, and promoting integrity, diversity and honesty within the profession. The Florida Bar has an outstanding record of promoting the achievement of these objectives. Those among our membership who are solo practitioners or small firm lawyers have played, and will continue to play, an important role within our profession and The Florida Bar. As Chair of the Solo & Small Firm Section of The Florida Bar, I am honored to be among the membership of Florida’s solo and small firm practitioners. The legal profession would not be where we are today without them.
